PETALING JAYA: A Kelantan PAS leader says the party will not respond to Umno’s threat to contest all state and parliamentary seats should the Islamist party sideline Muafakat Nasional (MN).
Speaking to FMT, Kelantan PAS secretary Che Abdullah Mat Nawi said they did not want to add to tensions between the two parties, insisting their focus was on unity.
“I don’t wish to comment (on Kelantan Umno’s threat), I don’t want to muddy the waters,” he said.
Che Abdullah said that at times, PAS was even stronger in its support for Umno than Umno itself and so the perception that it was trying to sideline Umno should not arise.
“As an example, in the Perak crisis, all PAS assemblymen supported the motion of confidence which was brought by Umno, while Umno assemblymen themselves did not support it,” he said.
Yesterday, Kelantan Umno secretary Akbar Salim warned PAS against ditching MN, saying it would contest against the party in every seat in the state at the next elections if it were to do so.
Meanwhile, Mohd Hushaimi Hussian, special officer to the Kelantan menteri besar, said the grassroots wanted to see Malay and Bumiputera parties united, and advised against buying into the “hidden agendas” of some party leaders.
